South Padre Island New Public Boat Ramp
By DAISY MARTINEZ Island Breeze
After months of deliberation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Cameron County has received a permit for a proposed boat ramp at Isla Blanca County Park.
In 2002, Texas Parks and Wildlife awarded the county a grant for $800,000 to build the ramp.
Javier Mendez, Cameron County parks director, said the permit came in last week.
Part of the delay was agreeing to all the terms that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the National Marine Fisheries required, Mendez said.
The county judge needs to sign the permit and send it back to the Corps for their signatures, Mendez said.
As part of getting the permit, the ramp will need to have an access channel and a “groin” to the south of the boat ramp as part of mitigation.
“The groin is kind of like a jetties. … It will create sea grass and sea life, and it will cut down on erosion on the backside of the boat ramp,” Mendez said.
The channel will also need to be marked so that boats do not stray into the sea grass, Mendez said.
“We will mark the channel with PVC pipes that are like plumbing pipelines every 5 feet to keep the boats from wondering off the path,” Mendez said.
The boat ramp will be constructed at Children’s Beach behind Dolphin Cove in the park. It will measure 9 feet wide and 45 feet long.
The county will include 19 parking spaces and post a $10 annual parking fee. |
