Radisson South Padre Now the ISLA GRAND BEACH RESORT

The Radisson Resort South Padre Island is Now called the ISLA GRAND BEACH RESORT
They still have the same owners and it has not sold but they are no longer a Radisson hotel. It does not seem to have affected business here. Everyone knows the Radisson and will still continue to stay here. It is the Island's most popular and prestegious resort.
The Condominum Tower section of the ISLA GRAND BEACH RESORT has always officially been called the Sea Island Tower, and in the MLS, that is how the Units will be listed from now on.
Per our MLS: "Please be advised as of Friday October 17, 2008 the Radisson Resort has been changed to Isla Grand Beach Resort. The Condos for sale within the hotel have always been called Sea Island Tower, therefore the listings in the PLS will be changed from Radisson to the correct name of Sea Island Tower. Friday morning I will update all listings in the system to reflect the change." |

Why is it no longer part of the Radisson hotel chain? Was the hotel so damaged by Dolly that it no longer meets the standards to be a Radisson hotel?
Without knowing the facts, it sounds like the hotel is not as valuable as it once was. I feel sorry for the condo owners, who will now probably have lower property values.
So why did the hotel owners bail out of the Radisson franchise, and presumably go independent? It's rare to hear of a hotel that actually gets better after they decide to "leave the family". Perhaps the reasons were economic, and they couldn't afford to support the franchise after all the losses from Dolly, and the severe economic downturn?
I pray that we don't hear any other tales like this in coming year. We've already gone through too much during the past year. |

It is a shame that we have lost our Radisson, but it is normal for the economy to go through an up-down cycle every decade or so. The big difference this time is that credit is tight, suggesting the recovery will probably be extra slow. Toss in the effects of Dolly, which was our first real real hurricane in many years, and it will probably take a few extra years for our island to recover to its former glory. But just you wait, when the economy does come back, those Radisson head honchos at the home office will be begging the owner to rebrand that hotel.
But all is not loss. This is still an extremely beautiful place, and people will still need vacations. Businesses will rebuild, and more will follow when the economy eventually rebounds. Our government is working hard to revive the national economy, and there is serious talk of another stimulus package in the works. We also still have the beautiful gulf, the beaches, and the tropical weather.
God Bless all the real estate agents on this island. You have helped market our island to outsiders, which support the backbone of our economy. Those new residents and guests bring valuable new businesses, attractions, and jobs to the island, making it a better place for everybody. Without you real estate agents, we simply would not have an island so nice, so please hang in there and know that your efforts are appreciated.
Alice Donahue, after Dolly I have been saying prayers each night for you, your staff, and everybody else on the island that tries hard to make this island such a great place. With the Lord's help, we will eventually recover from this unique tragedy. and we can all rebuild. God Bless you all.
p.s. and pray that the leaning tower of padre soon falls into the sea, so that it can be washed away and we can rebuild that too. |

I heard that they changed the name because they didnot want to pay for the radisson name. I am sure having the name alone costs quite a bit to pay yearly. wish them the best it is a beautiful hotel. |

It IS a beautiful hotel, no question about it. Best beach on the island. Franchises always try to squeeze as much as possible from independent owners, that's their business. I strongly suspect the Radisson's owner(s) decided it was no longer worth the standard 6% royalty to keep the Radisson name, and they could do better on their own. Unless the owner has a VERY good marketing team on his side, losing the Radisson name is going to reduce total revenue, that seems highly likely . Some customers really enjoyed perks like the Radisson customer loyalty program, and that kind of stuff is going away with the Radisson name. Less revenue for the hotel means overall quality will probably slip, and that's not good for the island or the existing condo owners in the same building.
Don't forget that franchises tend to ensure standards are kept high, and make sure guests are kept happy. Those "sleep number" beds that Radisson requires cost a lot of money. Radisson even controls their "Tasteful Choices" menu. With somewhere in the area of 200 branded hotels, Radisson also has one heck of a procurement system for consumables, such as towels, soap, sheets, etc. It could be the hotel owner "used" Radisson resources to restore the hotel after Dolly, and with grim economic projections, decided the Radisson benefits were no longer worth the cost??? I'm sure a lot of hotel owners around the country are now taking a hard look at their own businesses, and looking for ways to save money until the economy recovers. It's probably similar to the current airline industry, which has been forced to cut customer service to the bare bone until the economy turns around. Basic survival mode.

The Radisson Resort is and always will be the best of South Padre Island no matter what the name is. Families have had their summer vacations here and will still come back every year. Companies and groups are already booking their conventions for next year. The same owners who have always run the hotel are still there doing a great job and the same employees that have been there 20 years or more worked 12 hour days 7 days a week to get the hotel looking as beautiful as it does today. I watched most of it from my condo on the 9th floor and I can assure all of the Sea Island Tower Owners that their investment will be protected and their rental income will not be reduced because the hotel is not a Radisson any longer. It was a very smart decision as it was very costly to carry that name. Now they can put the money into making it the first class resort it deserves to be. ISLA GRAND BEACH RESORT AND SEA ISLAND TOWERS SOUTH PADRE ISLAND!!!! AWESOME FUTURE AHEAD. |

Alice, good to have you back! You think they're going to take the money they were sending to Radisson and invest it back into the hotel? What improvements can we expect? Go ahead and spill the beans! |

It would be silly to expect much new investment by any hotel or other business on the island until the economy improves. Radison owners were smart to hunker down til this blows over |

Nice pun on words with the "blows over"!
History has shown that coastal markets always recover from both Hurricanes and economic cycles.
They allure of the coast dates back even before the roman times - where they built luxury resort communities all around the Mediterranean Sea. |

I agree. Eventually we'll recover. The allure of the island will never go away. We're just got hit by a bad one-two punch (hurricane and world-wide financial mess), and it will take longer than normal to recover this time.
