South Padre is usually sunny and warm. On average, the warmest month of the year is July and the wettest month is September. The highest temperature on record was on 2002 at 103(ºF). Look at the chart to the left to see the monthly average temperatures for our area.
South Padre Island TemperaturesIn this part of the country warm weather has arrived! It is Spring Break season and tens of thousands of college students have flocked to our island to enjoy the water and the sun’s rays. Unfortunately, most of them have already found out that facing the sun without proper protection is a painfully bad idea.

The consequences of too much sun exposure are many. They can range from the smallest consequence such as freckles and the most serious one which is skin cancer. Other consequences such as age spots, rough and leathery skin, fine wrinkles, blotchy complexion and spider veins on the face are also possible. There are several ways to prevent these negative results and here are some tips for those of you that are thinking of enjoying some fun in the sun.

1. Avoid Sunburn:

The more often you get sunburn the higher the chances you will develop skin cancer. Sunburns occur when tiny blood vessels in your skin burst from getting too much sun. In order to avoid the chances of getting a sunburn you should avoid exposure to the sun during the strongest sun times which are between 12 and 3pm. For maximum protection it might be better to avoid the sun from 10am to 4pm. Many people think that sunburn will eventually fade into a good tan but this does not happen.

2. Sun block:

When out in the sun you should wear sun block. A suntan (the production of melanin in the skin) is essentially your body’s way of protecting itself from the harmful effects of the sun. The more you can slow down this process, the less your skin will receive long-term damage from sun tanning. Use a block with a SPF or Sun Protection Factor of at least 15, but preferably greater. The block or sunscreen used should block UVA and UVB rays. You should apply it 20-30 min. before being exposed to the sun and reapply every 2 -3 hours if you've been out in the sun or when you come out of the water. There are several sun blocks available for different activities and body types such as: Sports, Waterproof, Hypoallergenic, Children. These products are available in your local drug stores, pharmacies and department stores and range from very affordable prices to a bit more expensive depending on the name brand of the product.

3. Use Products for Your Skin Type:

It is important to take into consideration your individual skin type. If your skin is fair, be extra careful and if you have noticed that your skin is easily burnt then make sure to use a sun block with a higher SPF. Extra sensitive skin is one which is prone to allergic reactions in which case a hypoallergenic sun block must be used. If you can’t easily find one, ask a pharmacist to recommend a useful one.

4. Protective Clothing:

Clothing serves as another barrier between the rays and your skin. When you are not in the water try to keep a light long sleeved shirt on as well as hats and light pants. The hat will help protect the top of your head which is specially sensitive to sunburn. It will also protect your face and eyes.

5. Lips and Eyes:

Many people slather on the sunblock and head outside to enjoy the water and sand. They forget that the sun’s rays are also harmful to your eyes and lips. There are chapsticks available that contain SPF 15 sunblock to protect the sensitive skin on the lips and keep them moisturized. It will prevent the lips from flaking and drying out. Eyes can also be damaged from the sun and sunglasses are now available that filter out UVA and UVB rays. There are several fashionable choices in all different colors to match your sense of style!

6. Make the tan last:

Once you have successfully achieved a great tan and have taken all the precautions above, how do you keep it? The best way to prevent your tan from flaking off on your way back home is to keep your skin moisturized. A good moisturizer preferably containing aloe vera will do the trick.

Now that you know how to better protect your skin and prevent the negative consequences from too much exposure to the sun, you are ready to hit the beach! Take a huge beach towel, a frisbee and some cool drinks and enjoy the great sand, water and sun available in South Padre!
Oh, and don’t forget your sun block!

The Texas Department of Transportation has rolled out a campaign against drunk driving for spring break.

The campaign brings out extra law enforcement to catch underage drinkers, and it also stresses the dangers of drunk driving.

"We don't want to be the cause of killing someone because we're drunk, so we always have a designated driver no matter what,” Antonio Walker, a student from Laredo, said.

Texas is number one in the country in drunk-driving deaths and almost one-third of those are 26 or younger.
